What To Start A Blog About ? Let Me Help You Figure It Out!

Hello folks, today we will be discussing a common question throughout the internet and that is “what to start a blog about ?”.

If you are one of many people that are indecisive of what to blog about then this post will answer some questions and give you examples on what a blog should have.

What’s A Blog ?

A blog is simply a website that is regularly updated and communicates to the readers in an almost conversation type of style. Since Blog websites are usually run by one person, this website more times than not will reflect the life of the author.

Blogs have become really famous in the last 5 years as they have given a voice to the average person that is willing to get behind a computer and devote their time to writing about their lives.

But blogs don’t necessarily have to be about your life. In fact, many blogs don’t have to do anything with your life. The appeal that rose through blogging was the fact that you could make money from it. If you want to read more on this take a look at a guide to making money online that is very simple and is bound to help you out.

Now that we know what a blog is then it’s time to talk about what everyone came here for.

What To Start A Blog About?

Find A Solution

First things first ! If you want to start blogging then for the rest of this post I’m going to assume that you want a blog that is attracting more visitors than the day before. I say this because if you noticed the real good blog websites tend to solve a problem that was there in the beginning .

For example, someone can build a blog based on “traveling on a budget” the problem here is pretty obvious there are many people that lack the income to travel freely so providing these visitors with a solution such as, how to find cheap hotels or where to eat that isn’t that expensive will really intrigue your audience and make your blog a big success.

Be That Support For Someone

Many people get on the internet to search for fears or better yet, life experiences that they are dealing with. For example, the other way I ran across this neat website that offers tips on how to cope with cancer. As you many know cancer can be such a dramatic change that can occur that most people are not emotional ready for.

This is where this website became the support! Think about it this website has many post on how to deal with cancer and if I’m a victim of cancer than I will be going back to this website till I’m up on my feet and don’t need the support.

They had post on how to change your lifestyle, how to surround yourself with the right people, and so much more ! I was really astonished here and it just shows there is a topic for everyone.

Are You Teaching Your Readers Something New?

Think about something that you can teach your readers that not every person can . This kind of  goes with finding a solution to a problem but try find that one thing or many things that you can teach your readers. For example, if I ran a fishing website I would have tutorials on how to cast a line or maybe how to remove a hook from a fishes mouth. These might seem like basic things but believe me people are definitely doing these search on the internet.

Be that blogger that is willing to help teach your readers something new and these readers will be coming back to read more of your post which will only increase your popularity.

We All Like A Good Story

Everyone loves stories and this holds true here as there is nothing more that readers want than to be entertained. As you may have guessed if you aren’t entertaining enough be sure that your readers will leave your website.

Time is money and money is time, get your readers attention right off the bat! How do you do this ? Go with a catchy headline or maybe start your post with an interesting short story but remember stay on topic.

Don’t ever get too technical ! Readers are coming to a blog not wikipedia, communicate with your audience as you would with your best friend.

those are some basic tips you should keep in mind with a blog.

Do You Have Any Ideas Yet ?

It’s very important that you concentrate on your audience and try to avoid your interest to a certain degree. Remember is very important that the content that you are writing that your readers can understand and grasp fairly easy.

If you choose a topic that might have some complicated terms then may its a good idea to have a resource pages where you provide your own explanation of these terms specially if it’s terms that you will be using a lot.

Find A Direction

The problem with a lot of blogs is that the authors just write about whatevers on their mind and most of the time this will be counterproductive as your website will lack the direction needed to succeed.

Think about if I go to a website looking for basketball drill tips and the author also writes about making money online. In my eyes, is this author credible or even trustworthy ?

This will pull me away from this website in a heartbeat. This direction is actually called a niche.

What’s A Niche ?

This will be a continuation from the find a direction topic above. As you may know a niche is just a topic you blog about or a direction but we need too make sure that this niche isn’t too broad or even too specific.

Why Not Too Broad ?

It’s very simple, there is a lot of competition on the search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) You need too narrow down your topic. So what’s too broad you may ask, right ?

Let’s say I wanted to start a blog on weight loss tips but this is one of the more saturated niches on the web but not all hope is lost. Instead of weight loss tips ill narrow it down a bit more like “weight loss tips for women” if thats too saturated I might go into “weight loss tips for women under 40” . You see there are many ways too narrow down a topic.

Why Not Too Specific ?

Now that you know why we don’t want a niche too broad let’s talk about the complete opposite. It’s okay to dive into a really specific niche but you might want to ask yourself, will I run out of things to blog about ?

Getting specific is good but think about it as this is a very common mistakes with beginners. If you choose a niche thats too specific you might run into this problem two years down the line.

Let’s put this in perspective ; Let’s say you blog 4 times a week for one year we are looking at a total of 208 post. This something that you might want to take sometime to think about.

What To Blog About ?

I will tell you what I tell all up and coming bloggers, you should write about your interest or passions as this is your best bet ! Remember you want to feel free writing and if you are writing about a topic that doesn’t necessarily interest you then you might fail to communicate to your readers in that conversation style that blogs should consist of.

It will be very hard to write 208 post about a topic that you really aren’t interested in . Actually I know many bloggers that write twice that many post now imagine if it was about something they weren’t interested in?

Become An Authority Website

first, an authority website is basically just a website that is very well respect in its industry. It is a website where people usually to in a search to find answer to their questions.

Remember theirs an audience for everything ! You be surprised of the amount of sub niches that are out there in the internet. You just have to find them and it definitely will be worth it.

You might think why do a sub niche specially if there is people searching for this but the reality is that you will have a better opportunity to build your social awareness as you will gain more visitors by going specific instead of broader.

Be Unique

Your blog is your voice and not every person is the same. don’t get me wrong is okay to get some ideas from the internet and even other bloggers or authority websites on the web but at the end of the day you want to stand out.

The issue with most bloggers that fail is that they think they aren’t good enough and tend to follow the exact path of other bloggers. They don’t even know the direction they want to go with their website and this can be a disaster.

I’ve even seen bloggers copy other bloggers because they don’t want to put in the work that it takes ! This is a big NO NO, in fact here’s my 5 basic blogging donts you should avoid.

Authenticity goes a along way as no one likes a copy cat and this holds very true in the world of blogging. Remember taking the work of other bloggers is nothing to be proud of and well the search engines aren’t going to be ranking you anytime soon if you do that.

Just take the long road travel as blogging isn’t a sprint but a marathon just be patient and your success will arrive.

How To Stand Out

From my experience, the bloggers that tend to stand out are the ones that are willing to go in depth with their posts. Anyone can write a post but not everyone can write a post well. What’s the difference ? if you think I’m talking about being grammatically correct then you are wrong.

I see many people on the web try writing an article on for instance, this same post topic “what to start a blog about” any one can write up a list of things to write about or topics. I could have done a chart on everything you can write about but i chose to go in depths on the whys and hows that many people tend to ignore.

I’m not trying to give myself on the back here but what is more likely to be helpful a list of topics or an in depth article explaining why you should blog about something specifically and ect.

Plus Google tends to love longer written article as your information will be a lot more valuable for your visitors.

Blogging Is Constantly Changing

Every day there are more blogs being written or created than before and thats just a testament on how blogging isn’t constantly changing. If you go 5 to 10 years back not many people would have guessed that blogging would have gained this type of popularity in such a short time.

You might want to change with belongings but it’s best to not as far as your personality is concerned. As long as there is an internet there will always be more and more topics to write about. As more people gain access to the internet the more of an opportunity there will be.

Even now, it’s constantly increase even more now as there has been such an increase of internet usage from phones that everyone has access to the internet. It’s no longer required to have a computer as it was in the past.

Are you looking for that making money online business opportunity ? Get started the same way I did.

I hope you found my advice useful on how what to start a blog about ! Leave your comments and ill be sure to get back to you as soon as possible.

yunier gonzalez

Hello everyone and welcome my name is Yunier Gonzalez as you might know. I help out people on the internet avoids scams and more importantly build their own online business. Remember sharing is caring so feel free to share my content with your friends :)

  1. Great advice on blogging here! I strongly go with sticking to a subject you enjoy – blogging about golf when you hate the outdoors is going to be no fun at all!
Interested in your recommendation, heard a lot about WA so will look into it further.

    • haha Totally agree ! it’s like me i love baseball.. what if i wrote about ping pong.. it just wouldn’t last long lol I suggest you take a look at wealthy affiliate as it has been the only program that i can strongly recommend that teaches how to make money online.

  2. Hey Yunier,

Well first off, anyone coming to this post will certainly have a great foundation for creating a very successful blog. Fantastic information.

One point you mentioned is having a direction. I’ve come across many blogs where the owner has no clear direction and I can’t even figure out what the blog is suppose to be about.

It’s just a collection of random musings – hey I get it – it’s their blog and they can do what they want.

But if they want to take it to the next level and turn that blog into an income stream, they truly need to find a consistent direction.

Like your site you have a very specific direction for this blog, and I know immediately what this site is all about. How to make money online – very clear.

So even if you went off in a different direction for one post every so often – I would still know what your main direction is with this blog, because that direction is at the core of your site.

    Great info, keep it coming.

    • hello there leo,

I’m glad you found the information that I provided useful. I certainly agree that without the right direction then your website is not going anywhere. I’ve seen many websites like you have that are just a mix of random thoughts and topics that I have asked myself what is the website about ? Needless to say I never found an answer.

In my opinion, the direction that you wish to take your website is as important as the effectiveness of your actual content. It’s definitely alright to go to left field with your post once in a while but always keeping in mind what your website is suppose to be about.

  3. Hi!
I like your explanation for a blog. To the point and easy to understand.
Going in deep is the only way to keep your readers happy as they are always looking for something, lol
    Great job!

    • Im glad you enjoyed this article ! It’s true you must explain your topic completely as you can’t leave any sub topic not discussed. The better the solutions is to their problem the more likely that they will return to your website for further information.

  4. Great post, lots of info to digest. I have been doing IM for some time now and have seen quite a bit of success and the points in your post are very accurate and will be very helpful to your readers, thanks and once again great job, cheers Mike.

    • hello valerie,

I definitely agree that you must write about your passion or at the very least have your interest as Google will spot those temporary long term websites from the ones that will disappear in a couple of months.

Also be true to your personality!

  9. Hi Yunier
This is so great, so clear and so indepth. What to write a blog on has always been a big question for me. The info you have shared is going to be very helpful as I add content to my website. Thank you so much for sharing this!

    • hello dawn,

I’m glad that this post was able to help you out as finding content to write about and a blog in general can be a very daunting task for many but I hope this post encourages them to pursue what they are passionate about.

  10. Hi Yunier. I really enjoyed reading this post, and it definitely has good information on how to start a blog. I found it very interesting, because it cleared up a few questions I had on what I should be writing about online. I read your points about picking a niche and making sure it isn’t too broad or too specific, and I thought they were very important as that is what I have struggled with in the past!

    • hey allan,

First and foremost thank you for taking the time to comment on my article. I’m glad I was able to answer your questions and remember be positive with your writing, be yourself and success will follow. Just be true to you.

  11. Hey Yunier,
You shared some real powerful information about blogging. You really hit the nail on the head with finding a solution. That is where it all starts and the good thing about that is there will always be problems that need solving. Thank for sharing.

    • Hello Chad,

I’m glad you found this article helpful. Like you said as long as there are problems solution will be needed. This is why I believe that blogging is here for the long haul.

  12. It’s a fine balance between not writing something too broad and not being too specific. But you are on the money.
My first website was too broad and I felt myself competing against too many others , with most of them being large corporations.
You’ve made a few other great points here so I’ll bookmark your site for future reference. Cheers.

    • Hey Nigel,

Thank you for the time to comment ! It’s true what you say though sometimes we as writers struggle walking that tight rope between too broad of a content or too specific. We all been there just keep growing as a blogger and success will follow.

  13. Very Nice site , I LOVE how you explain the different steps to writing a blog! There is PLENTY of cool and useful info here , thank you and keep up the AWESOME WORK !!

  14. This is a great article. I have a quick question. Can you give an example of what you mean by too broad a niche and too narrow?

    • Hey zachary,

That’s a good question.. A niche too broad in my opinion would be like weight loss. If you are going to be talking about weight loss in general then you are going to find it quite hard to rank under this niche.. There is alternatives of course, for instance If i were to do a website on weight loss I would try to target a specific audience at the very least.. Something along the lines of ” how to lose weight after pregnancy” This is a topic that you can write about extensively..

As far as too specific of a niche is concern, let me stick with the theme here of weight loss.. Let’s say I would to choose the sub niche of ” Losing belly fat for women under 30 that have given birth” In my Opinion this is a little too specific. if anything this could be a sub topic on your website if you chose the niche from above.

I hope this help you decipher a broad niche from a narrow one.

  15. Nice comprehensive approach to teaching blooger the basics of what to blog about. I think you hit the nail on the head.

  16. Someone once said Give and your shell Receive. So if you focus on help people with their problem I’m sure you will definitely succeed in whatever niche you chose.

This is a great article Yunier. Thumbs up to you. Keep writing and I’ll be back.

    • I agree with you cathy , the issue most bloggers face is that they fail to identify what is the problem that visitors are coming to their website for. How can you give an answer to a problem you don’t even know of ? That’s why it’s so important to organise your website and find the direction.

  17. Recently, a friend of mine wanted to start a website but don’t know how to go about blogging. I knew his interest is in sports and I threw him a question related to the topic. Surprisingly, he wrote his reply in a 900 words article. He was very descriptive and provided me with some suggestions to my problems. Needless to say, the article is also rich with long tail keywords (which I did point out to him). He felt encouraged.

You see, most people tend to see blogs as a professional piece. If you can just take that out of the equation and write freely on something that you are interested in, it’s really not that hard. Don’t let too many rules or expectations limit your thoughts and creativity. Just write with your heart and before long, you’ll find yourself blogging away.

    • Hello Cathy,

You make a very interesting point because I see many people hesitant to embark with blogging simply because they don’t think they are good enough of writers. The truth is you don’t need to be an english major to succeed within the blogging business.

It’s always a lot easier to blog or write on a certain topic if it’s something you are very passionate about like the friend of yours. Thank you for that comment it’s very inspiring for anyone that might have some doubts.

  18. Great article. I like to tell a story in my blog posts. People love a good story, especially one that would put a smile on their face.

  19. Hi this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you
have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • Good question, You don’t have to do any coding for your blogs as they are all automated but you still have the option to adjust your themes in the editor section if you have knowledge about coding but I don’t recommend it unless you know what you are doing. I hope this helps you out.
