After you finish reading this post you might understand why your website isn’t ranking that well or if you are using your keywords the wrong way. If you don’t know how to do a keyword research, I suggest you take a look at one of my earlier post on how to do a keyword research.
How people usually use keywords
If you are new to this and you are just starting off, then you might be having a hard time ranking on the search engines with the keywords you are using. You might be asking why?
It’s plain and simple, you are targeting keywords that are too general or have too much competition that you will not outrank. Usually these websites that are on the top of the search engines are authority websites.
How do you get around these websites you may ask?
It’s quite simple. Long tail keywords!
I’ll first give you an example. Instead of using a keyword like “online business”, you might want to use a keyword phrase that is longer most of the times I aim for 5 words at least. What I would use would be something like ” online business for stay at home moms” look at that, 7 words!
Now that’s not all you do though, you also have to see if there are any authority websites for this keyword search.
Following along ? I’ve explained it in a very broad/ general way but keep reading as in the end of this post, I will provide a video how I go about long tail keywords.
What would you gain from this?
This wont be an overnight thing but as you target more long tail keywords then you will begin ranking higher in the search engines. If you do not have an authority website then this is the way to go. This will help you gain more traffic and over time it will help you build your own authority website.
